tub drain replacement

: I am replacing bath shower tub. I'm using schedule 40 bath drain from Watts. Instructions do not clearly indicate where to place the black rubber gasket at bottom drain. Should the gasket be directly on the pvc shoe elbow under the tub or above the tub on the twist n close assembly? : Thank You, : Larry
